CROWN Bevcan Europe and Middle East, a business unit of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com), showcased a wide range of world-class products and services at this year’s BrauBeviale show in Nuremberg, Germany. True innovation is at the heart of the show and Crown was out in force to demonstrate how brand-building packaging can help its customers to increase product awareness, enhance product placement, and ultimately boost brand owners’ market presence and share.

Today’s world demands not only packaging that lends brands a competitive edge, but also a format that stands out to consumers - whether it be aesthetically pleasing, physically or interactively engaging or enhanced to improve consumption metrics. In order to captivate consumers, brand owners, designers and retailers alike must utilize technologies that are best suited to respond directly to the needs of the consumer.

Crown introduced two exciting, brand new products at Brau this year, and demonstrated tried and tested options that have already proven their effectiveness in the marketplace.

CrownSmart™

Is a brand new interactive application that allows brand owners to instantly access consumer behavior via a unique Data Matrix code (DMC), situated beneath the tab of a beverage can. Through interacting with consumers using special promotions, games, video footage and competitions, brands can anticipate trends and truly understand the market in which they are operating in real time. Consumers access interactive data via an app, which then allows them to interact fully with the brand via a compatible smartphone or tablet.

Cottle™

Crown’s latest product development combines optimum material utilization with the process efficiency and system economics of cans. This unique format, derived from the popularity of the CrownsleekTM  range and the growing trend towards unique can formats, enhances product placement and enables brands to stand out from their competitors in an eye-catching yet practical way. Utilizing an innovative combination of can body and end, Cottle™ is tomorrow’s can, today.

Advances in printing technology and surface finishes offer a spectacular new level of shelf appeal. For example, Crown utilizes new high-resolution printing techniques that are specifically tailored for beverage cans.

As the first can-maker to invest in a one-stop-shop design and graphic facility for customers across the EMEA region, Crown Bevcan’s European Design Studio in Leicester, UK, includes cutting-edge pre-press and print equipment. This facility provides brand owners with a state-of-the-art approach to the development of beverage can graphics and finishes.  Striking packaging design concepts can be created, finalized and proofed all under one roof, shortening the development process and allowing a quick route to market.

Crown’s pre-press and print technology is amongst the most advanced in the can making industry: Using digital file transfer, digital plate-making processes, the latest reprographic software and color separation techniques with up to eight color decorations, Crown is able to reduce lead times and improve print quality. Using Crown AccentsTM variable printing technology, up to 24 different designs – such as words or graphics – can be printed in a single manufacturing run. This process creates a range of cans for brands seeking to encourage customers to view their products as a collectible set or to personalize cans with their own name or messaging.

Thanks to the excellent infrastructure in place in Europe, last year alone some 390,000 tons of recycled aluminum cans remained in the European circular economy. A beverage can recycled today can be back on retailers’ shelves in the same guise within an astounding 60 days, and with Crown also recycling 100% of its process scrap metal during the manufacturing process, nothing is ever wasted.

Matt Twiss, Marketing & Business Development Director CROWN Bevcan Europe & Middle East Commented: “Crown has made some incredible developments and revolutionary steps that are a first for the industry and we are very proud to showcase our infectious passion for the beverage can. We use the latest technology capabilities and deep consumer insight together with a genuine focus on design and quality to create an integrated approach that recognizes the interaction of every function and activity of the iconic beverage can. We are at Brau to showcase our competitive advantage, the effectiveness of our people, ideas and processes, and to discuss our aspiration as a company to keep the impact on the environment to an absolute minimum.  Day-to-day, our customers’ needs are everything to us - we take the time to understand their wants and desires, and, as shown here today, we’re incredibly proud of the results.”

Aligning seamlessly with the BrauBeviale theme of Creative Beer Culture meets Premium Spirits, CROWN Aerosols & Speciality Packaging Europe also had a presence alongside CROWN Bevcan Europe and Middle East, showcasing high-quality containers that enable premium spirits brands to stand out in a retail environment, while providing optimum product protection.
