Facts & Benefits

Crown Speciality Packaging - Image of a wide range of luxury products in metal packaging.

When launching new products or refreshing an existing brand, marketers have several packaging material options to choose from. So what makes metal so special? Mostly, it comes down to the fact that metal has several sensorial qualities that evoke consumer response.

To the touch, metal is undeniably sensual. The inherent feel of metal can be enhanced with intensely tactile qualities via creative forming – and deforming – as well as the application of “soft touch,” “velvet,” or grained surface textures.

To consumers’ ears, metal evokes robustness with its characteristic musical ring.

To the consumer eye, metal creates an impression of luxury and evokes natural properties.

Metal is also special due to its ability to be recycled.  A unique chemical structure makes metal 100% recyclable as often as necessary without losing any of its properties. Recycling simply turns one steel product into another new high-grade steel product.

Steel recycling is environmentally friendly, since it reduces the consumption of iron ore. In fact, every year more than 500 million tons of iron ore are saved worldwide by using steel scrap. The global steel industry uses about 1 million tons of scrap every day to make steel. This corresponds to some 42,000 tons per hour or 12 tons per second. Collected, conditioned and melted down, recycled steel beings to metamorphose into a new product. The recycled tinplate can then be reborn into many applications, including an automobile, a food can, a washing machine or a steel structure.
