Crown Cork & Seal Major Capacity Change At Facility

Tuesday, February 27, 2001

PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Paris Bourse: CCK) today announced a major capacity realignment at its Weston, Ontario plant. Crown will convert two of its existing four aluminum beverage can lines to manufacture two-piece steel food cans and substantially reduce the plant's beverage capacity.

The Weston plant is one of the Company's largest beverage can facilities in North America and employs approximately 200 people. Crown does not anticipate an employee reduction related to the conversion. The new food line adds much needed capacity to the North American two-piece food can market and will be operational in the second quarter of 2001.

John W. Conway, Chairman, President and CEO, commented, "This action is consistent with our strategy to rationalize capacity and aggressively cut costs. Converting underutilized manufacturing capacity to the growing two- piece food can market will help capture sales for our Food Can Division and at the same time trim capacity in the beverage can industry."

Crown Cork & Seal is the leading supplier of packaging products to consumer marketing companies around the world. World headquarters are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
