Crown officially opened the doors of its new, state-of-the-art beverage can plant in the United States on Tuesday, May 9, 2017. The event was attended by a variety of state and local officials as well as customers, suppliers and other guests.

Situated in Nichols, New York, the facility represents the first greenfield beverage can plant to open nationwide in the last 20 years and was built to support the country’s rising demand for specialty beverage cans – defined as sizes other than the standard diameter for 12-ounce beverages. These cans are in high demand with consumers, who are seeking more choices from their favorite brands. Beverage manufacturers also see value in having different options, including sleek style and slim style cans, which can help refresh their packaging mix and enhance their image to appeal to different consumer demographics.

In addition to helping Crown’s customers expand their product portfolios, the Nichols plant will bring over 160 jobs to Tioga County, New York by 2018.

The opening of the new facility also aligns with the Company’s 125th anniversary year. Crown was founded in 1892 when William Painter changed the trajectory of the beverage industry with the invention of the bottle cap. Today, the Company operates 146 facilities in 36 countries and has a diversified metal packaging technology portfolio that serves the beverage, food, personal care, household and luxury markets.
