Crown Cork & Seal Wins Two Steel Packaging Effectiveness Awards 2002

PHILADELPHIA, May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Crown Cork & Seal Company, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) announced today that it has been awarded two Steel Packaging Effectiveness Awards 2002 by APEAL (The Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) for its Self-Heating Can and its shaping technology as demonstrated by the Teisseire container. Awards were given out during the evening gala of the "International Steel Packaging Congress" on April 25, 2002 during Interpack in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Developed in collaboration with Nestle and Thermotic Developments, Crown's self-heating can increases the temperature of the can contents by 40 degrees Celsius in only three minutes. The container withstands retort and sterilization, and is ideal for many hot foods, including coffee, tea, soups, sauces and dairy-based products. The container is currently undergoing market testing in the United Kingdom with Nestle's Nescafe Original Coffee.

Teisseire's innovative three-piece blow-formed syrup can was designed to help the market-leading French cordial manufacturer differentiate its products at the point of purchase. A single piece plastic cap, developed by Astra Plastique, a division of Crown Cork & Seal, provides an attractive extension to the shape of the can. The cap includes a heat sealed aluminum cover to retain product flavor and aroma and its hinged design makes opening and pouring convenient.

APEAL's Steel Packaging Effectiveness Award recognizes packaging concepts that have proven successful in the market and generated increased sales, market share, profitability, brand awareness and/or consumer attitude shifts. An international jury panel consisting of branded goods manufacturers, retailers, packaging designers and packaging press selected the winners.
