Awareness program contributes to charities and supports company’s commitment to a sustainable future

Philadelphia, PA – April 22, 2013. As part of its ongoing commitment to providing environmentally responsible packaging solutions, Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com) participates in several national and local events designed to promote recycling and provide charitable support, including 2013’s Great American Can Roundup Industry Challenge, organized by The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI). The annual Can Roundup, which promotes can recycling and aims to raise $1 million for various charitable organizations, began in mid-January and runs until October 15, 2013.

During the drive, Crown’s aerosol, beverage, closures, food and speciality packaging facilities around the U.S. serve as collection points for recycling empty beverage cans in the community. These cans are combined with the cans Crown’s employees bring from home or consume on-site, and are then redeemed for cash, with the funds being donated to charity. The facility that recycles the most pounds of cans per capita will win the 2013 Great American Can Roundup and be recognized on November 15.

“Metal is the most valuable material in the recycling stream,” stated Andy Bolton, President, CROWN Aerosol Packaging North America, one of the company’s Business Units participating in the Can Roundup. “This drive is a chance for Crown’s facilities to share that value with local communities, while working positively for the environment and the promotion of metal recycling.”

Awareness for the recyclability of aerosol containers continues to grow. This is, in part, due to the fact that aerosols can be recycled with other steel containers. Aerosol cans are being recycled today in over 2,000 communities nationwide with ongoing curbside and drop-off recycling programs.

CROWN Aerosol Packaging North America, like all of the company’s Business Units, also looks beyond the packaging it develops to identify opportunities to improve the sustainability of its operations. For instance, the aerosol plant in Faribault, MN uses variable frequency technology to adjust power in the facility, reducing annual energy use on production lines by 9%. Crown’s Mexico City aerosol packaging plant utilizes an eco-friendly process to clean and reuse rags that would have been thrown out, lowering the hazardous waste inventory by 82%.
